Hard facts on the hard hat

Hard hats are a big part of job site safety. Are you taking proper care of yours?

For most of you, grabbing a hard hat for work is like putting on pants. But how much do you really know about this important piece of safety equipment?

Hard hats should be replaced every five years.

Yep.... even though your hard hat might LOOK like it's fine, the sun does take a toll on its efficiency... and, if you crack it before its time to replace... get a new one.
Make sure hats are stored out of direct sunlight while not in use. Direct sunlight can degrade the hard plastic outer shell, even if you're not wearing it.
Can't remember when you got it? Most hats have the date of manufacture stamped or molded onto the shell, usually on the underside of the brim.

Hard hat shells should be replaced every year.

Yeah, we work hard. We ALL sweat. That sweat can cause stretching to the suspension that protects your head. Replacing ensures your hat is going to work the way it is supposed to when you need it to.
Make sure your hat is adjusted to fit snugly, so it works like it's supposed to.
DO NOT wear any other hats under your hard hat, or store things under your hats (cigs, keys, pens, work orders, etc). These habits could compromise the protective capabilities of your hard hat.

Get roughed up a bit?
Replace your hat, even if you don't see damage.

The effectiveness of the hat may have been compromised, even if you don't see it.
Inspect your hat every time you take it off. Even the smallest crack can mean it will not protect you in the event of an accident.
On that note, DO NOT engrave or alter your hat in any way... if you have to customize, get a PT&S sticker! But if you do put stickers on your hat, make sure they are not covering any damage or ventilation holes.
If you clean your hat, use mild sap and water, never use heavy abrasives or solutions because they could damage the protective shell and suspension.
