When is it a good idea to rent vs. buy?
Everyone loves unpacking a shiny new tool. After all, buying and using the latest cool, new tools is one of the reasons we got into the trades in the first place, right?
These days, budgets are stretched thinner and thinner and it takes a little creativity to keep comfortable profit margins...
BUT that doesn't mean you should rely on outdated or inefficient tools.
Not only can they be unsafe to use, they also can add more time to complete a job, and time is money, right?
Renting may seem obvious for SkidSteers and loaders. How about when it comes time to do that tile job or use a large rotary hammer?
Most of us think of renting when it comes to the big equipment -- the stuff you don't use all the time.
These items take up space and cost more, so it's a no-brainer to rent a jackhammer, compactor, or even a lift.
But you should also consider rentals for the everyday stuff that can easily increase your productivity when you need to.
Got a big framing job but no budget for an extra saw at the moment? Why not rent one for a few bucks for your helper to cut blocking while you work? You get the idea.
Here are a few questions to ask when considering renting over buying:
- How often will I use this and where is it going to be stored when not in use?
- Can I rent and bill it to the job... AND get the job done faster?
- If I buy - how much time will it take to maintain? Is buying the tool worth not only the financial investment, but also the time it would take to keep it running well?
We have a great selection of rental tools by the day, week, or month!
Remember, it is a good idea to call or stop in to see what's available beforehand.
