Staying safe when you have to work alone

Today, many companies are finding it hard to hire and keep good workers... but the work still needs to be done even if there are less people to do it. Because of this, you might find yourself working alone on a job site.

As a tradesman, you know that working alone can cause certain safety issues and can also make some jobs more difficult. Trimming large branches, replacing windows, or installing drywall require extra caution when working alone.

Here are a few tips to follow when working by yourself, or preparing an employee to handle things alone at another job site:

  • Set up a "check in" system
Make sure someone knows where you're at and what you're doing at all times. A phone call or even a text a few times throughout the day let's someone know everything is ok. If you're sending an employee to a job site alone, make sure he checks in at regular intervals as well. Make sure you have an alternate contact who can get to the site easily if someone misses a check in or if there is another issue.
  • Schedule lower risk tasks for days when you don't have help
Tackle smaller projects or easier tasks on days when you'll have no backup. Save the more complicated jobs for when you have help.
  • Set up a "To Do" list
Most people find this helpful for getting stuff done anyway, but when you're working alone, your thoughts may wander and you might forget a crucial task or safety measure without someone else looking out for you. Writing it down helps make you stay more productive.
  • Make sure you have the right tools
Writing that "To Do" list may also help you organize your plan before you get to the job site, and ensure you bring all the tools you need to accomplish what you need to. Also, think of extra tools that may be helpful in getting things done more efficiently that wouldn't be necessary of there were more of you working. AND don't forget safety equipment!

  • If it can't be done safely, DON'T DO IT
Accidents happen all the time under the BEST of circumstances, so be especially careful when you're working alone. And if you have doubts about doing it alone, wait until you can get some help.
